Two More Tools for Creating Educational Timelines in Class

After yesterday’s post we received a couple of requests from our followers on social media suggesting the inclusion of Hstry and MyHistro to the list. These are two timeline creation tools we have already covered in separate posts in the past. As teachers, you can use these web applications with students to create educational timelines showcasing the development of a given phenomenon or to chronicle the major historical events over a stretch of time or provide a biographical narration of  a historical figure…etc. Timelines can embed different multimedia materials including: text, images, video, maps and many more.

1- HSTRY

HSTRY is a very good web tool for creating multimedia timelines in class. The process is very simple and easy. Just sign up either as a teacher or a student, choose the timeline you want to work on and start adding your events. You can add images, videos, and audio. The great thing about HSTRY is that it allows teachers to create a classroom and invite students to join it. Within this classroom, teachers will be able to share timelines with their students and view the ones they create. Teachers can also make their timelines interactive by adding questions for students to answer.

2- MyHistory

‘Watch and read thousands of fascinating timelines, or create your own. Complete with text, video and pictures to create a dynamic timeline mashup. Using myHistro, you can combine maps and timelines seamlessly into one great presentation, convert any public timeline into a personal pdf file, or export it into Google Earth format for offline storage. All completed timelines can be embedded into your blog and websites for maximum exposure.’

A Great Web Tool for Creating and Viewing Educational Timelines in 3D

Tiki-Toki is an excellent web tool for creating beautiful timelines to use in your class. We have already featured this tool in several posts in the past but today we are revisiting it again as it has a very good feature added to it which allow you to view your timelines in 3D. With this new update, teachers will be able to create timelines that can be viewed in 3D format.

Tiki-Toki is easy to use and does not require any software download. All you have to do is sign up for a free account and start designing your timelines right away. The free account includes the basic features to create a timeline and is limited to one timeline only. There is however a special account for teachers for $125 a year which includes access to all new features.

Timelines you create via Tiki-Toki can also include different multimedia materials such as images, text, and videos from YouTube and Vimeo. You can create different categories for the events you include in your timeline and colour code them for easy access. Another great feature of Tiki-Toki is the ‘group edit’ which allows you to invite your colleagues to contribute to your timelines and work on them collaboratively. Depending on the account you set up, timelines you create on Tiki-Toki can be embedded in a website or blog using an embed code. They can also be shared with others through a generated URL.

Two Great Tools for Creating Interactive Timelines

In today’s post I am sharing with you two important web tools that you can use with students in class to create interactive timelines. These timelines can include a wide variety of multimedia materials including: text, images, video, maps and many more. And in the case of Silk, there is even the possibility to invite collaborators to help with editing. Also, both of these apps are available for iPad users.

1- MyHistory

2- Silk
Silk is another excellent tool for creating interactive visualizations. You can use Silk’s drag and drop tools to easily add images, videos, tables, maps, and charts. Silk also allows you to convert your spreadsheets into Silk pages. You can invite anyone to edit and publish data to your Silk page. There are several video tutorials in the site to guide you through the process of building your own Silk visualizations.

Terrific Timeline Creation Tool for Students (Works on Chromebooks Too)

Timeline, as its name indicate, is a very good tool from Read Write Think that you can use  to create web based timelines. The tool is very simple and students can use it to graphically represent a sequence of data (events, facts..,etc) along a chronological line. These timelines can be arranged by by date, time or event.

To start creating a timeline, head over to this page. Type in your name and project title then hit “start”. Now click anywhere on the timeline to add an item at that location. To edit an item, double click it. You can then customize the content and placement of your items as you like. Drag to adjust positions, click on the bin icon to delete  and when you are done click on “finish” to save your work to your computer or share it with others.

Timeline works on both computer and Chromebooks.
